什么是 Stommel–Arons model?

又称: Stommel--Arons model

Definition 21.7 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 3 · 第 21 章 — Ocean Dynamics

The Stommel–Arons model of the abyssal circulation supposes that deep water is supplied by convection at a few high-latitude sources, that it returns to the upper ocean by a slow, uniform upwelling W0W_0 through the base of the thermocline, balanced by downward mixing of heat, and that the interior flow is geostrophic and conserves potential vorticity. The circulation is closed by deep western boundary currents.

The Stommel–Arons abyssal circulation in a sector of the Northern Hemisphere ocean, seen from above. The deep water sinks at a source S_0 near the pole, runs towards the equator in a deep western boundary current, and leaks into an interior that flows poleward, everywhere rising slowly through the thermocline (the dots, upwelling towards the reader).
