Silicates are classified by how their tetrahedra link. In a nesosilicate the tetrahedra are isolated; in a sorosilicate they are linked in pairs by one shared oxygen; in a cyclosilicate they form closed rings, each sharing two corners; in an inosilicate they form endless chains, single (each tetrahedron sharing two corners) or double (two single chains joined side by side, half the tetrahedra sharing three corners); in a phyllosilicate they form endless sheets, each sharing three corners; in a tectosilicate they form a three-dimensional framework, each sharing all four corners.
