Weathering is the slow breaking-up of rock where it stands, by frost, by water, by the roots of plants and by heat and cold. The rock is broken into pieces, but the pieces stay in place.

Frost breaks rock. Each night of frost, the ice in a crack pushes a little; after many winters, the crack is wide enough for a piece to break away.
