Two events $A$ and $B$ are independent if

\P(A \cap B) = \P(A)\,\P(B) .

When $\P(B) > 0$ , this is equivalent to $\pcond{B}{A} = \P(A)$ : knowing $B$ does not change the probability of $A$ .
