What is Magnetic field?

A magnet modifies the space around it (Chapter 14): it creates everywhere a magnetic field $\vect B$. A compass reads its direction (the needle aligns with $\vect B$, north end forward); a Hall probe measures its magnitude, in teslas ($\mathrm{T}$).
