A magnet modifies the space around it (Chapter 14): it creates everywhere a magnetic field $\vect B$ . A compass reads its direction (the needle aligns with $\vect B$ , north end forward); a Hall probe measures its magnitude, in teslas ( $\mathrm{T}$ ).
