De toestandsvergelijking van zeewater geeft zijn dichtheid ρ(S,T,p)\rho(S, T, p) als functie van zoutgehalte, temperatuur en druk. De haline contractiecoëfficiënt is β=(1/ρ) ∂ρ/∂S\beta = (1/\rho)\,\partial\rho/\partial S bij constante temperatuur en druk. De dichtheidsanomalie σ\sigma is een dichtheid min 1000 kg m−31000\,\mathrm{kg}\,\mathrm{m}^{-3}: σt=ρ(S,T,0)−1000\sigma_t = \rho(S, T, 0) - 1000 gebruikt de gemeten temperatuur bij nul zeedruk, en de potentiële dichtheidsanomalie σθ=ρ(S,θ,0)−1000\sigma_\theta = \rho(S, \theta, 0) - 1000 de potentiële temperatuur.
