什么是 Cementation, cement?

又称: cementation · cement

Definition 23.6 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 1 · 第 23 章 — Diagenesis and Sedimentary Basins

Cementation is the precipitation of minerals from the pore water in the pores of a sediment, which binds its grains together and reduces its porosity. The minerals so precipitated form the cement of the rock; the commonest are quartz, calcite, iron oxides and clay minerals.

A thin section of quartz sandstone, the Potsdam Sandstone (Cambrian) of New York State, in plane-polarised light. The rounded detrital grains are outlined by dark rims of dust and clay; the clear quartz outside the rims is cement that grew on the grains, in optical continuity with them, until the neighbouring overgrowths met along straight faces. Blue resin fills what is left of the pores. (M. C. Rygel, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons; scale bar of the original cropped.)
