Diagenesis is the set of physical, chemical and biological changes that a sediment undergoes after its deposition, at the temperatures and pressures of the upper crust, below those of metamorphism. It includes compaction, cementation, the dissolution of grains, and the replacement of one mineral by another; together they turn a loose sediment into a sedimentary rock.
