What is Fault throw, heave?

Also known as: throw (of a fault) · heave (of a fault)

Definition 5.13 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 1 · Chapter 5 — Cross-Sections

The throw of a fault is the vertical component of the displacement of a marker surface across it; its heave is the horizontal component, measured in the dip direction of the fault. For a dip-slip fault of dip φ\varphi, heave=throw/tan⁡φ\text{heave} = \text{throw}/\tan\varphi.
