The interference colour of an anisotropic grain is its colour between crossed polars in white light, at from extinction; it depends only on its retardation . The colours repeat in bands of about of retardation, each ending with a red-violet tint; each band is an order (first, second, third…). The Michel-Lévy chart shows the interference colours against the retardation, with the lines that relate the thickness of a section, the birefringence of a mineral and its colour.
