Definition 19.9 Primary & Middle School Earth and Space Sciences · 第 19 章 — Volcanoes

A pyroclastic flow is a fast avalanche of hot gas, ash and pieces of rock, from grains of dust to boulders, which rushes down the slopes of a volcano during an explosive eruption. (Pyro means fire and clastic means made of broken pieces.)

示例

Example 19.11 (Racing a pyroclastic flow)

A pyroclastic flow moving at 120 km/h120\,\mathrm{km}/\mathrm{h} heads for a village 6 km6\,\mathrm{km} down the valley. It takes 6÷120=0.056 \div 120 = 0.05 hour, that is 0.05×60=30.05 \times 60 = 3 minutes. Three minutes: nobody can run, or even drive, out of the valley in time. People are only safe if they have left before the eruption.
