什么是 Twin, polysynthetic twinning?

又称: twin (crystal) · polysynthetic twinning

Definition 8.13 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 1 · 第 8 章 — Optical Mineralogy

A twin is an intergrowth of two or more crystals of the same mineral whose lattices are related by a symmetry that the crystal itself does not have, such as a reflection across a plane (the twin plane). Polysynthetic twinning is repeated twinning on parallel planes, which divides a crystal into thin parallel lamellae whose orientations alternate.

The same field of a gabbro in thin section. In plane-polarised light (a), plagioclase is colourless with low relief, the pyroxene and olivine grains are pale brown-grey with high relief and dense cracks, and the opaque ore is black; the scale is a micrometer in the eyepiece. Between crossed polars (b), the plagioclase laths are striped by polysynthetic twinning, the pyroxene and olivine grains shine in second-order colours, and the ore stays black.
