What is Volcanic Explosivity Index?

Definition 6.14 University Earth and Space Sciences — Year 2 · Chapter 6 — Volcanic Eruptions

The Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) is an integer from 0 to 8 that measures the size of an eruption, chiefly by the bulk volume of its tephra: VEI 0 for less than 104 m310^{4}\,\mathrm{m}^{3}, VEI 1 up to 106 m310^{6}\,\mathrm{m}^{3}, then one step for every factor of ten, up to VEI 8 beyond 1012 m310^{12}\,\mathrm{m}^{3}, 1000 km31000\,\mathrm{km}^{3}. Column height and descriptions of the eruption are used when the volume is not known. A non-explosive eruption has VEI 0, whatever the volume of its lava.

Left: completeness of the global record. For each size, the fraction of the eruptions recorded between 1500 and 2024 that had already occurred by a given year; a complete record at a constant rate would follow the dotted diagonal. Right: annual rate of eruptions of VEI v, each counted over its own window, and the least-squares line of ; the open circle, VEI 7 since the year 1000, was not used in the fit. Data: Global Volcanism Program, Volcanoes of the World.
