What is Monotonicity?

A sequence $(u_n)$ is increasing if $u_{n+1} \geq u_n$ for all $n$, decreasing if $u_{n+1} \leq u_n$ for all $n$, and monotonic if it is increasing or decreasing. It is strictly increasing (resp. decreasing) when the inequalities are strict.
