An organic compound is a compound whose molecules are built on a skeleton of carbon atoms bonded to one another and to hydrogen atoms, possibly with other atoms such as oxygen and nitrogen. (Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and the carbonates are traditionally left out.)
