Wat is Partiële druk, oplosbaarheid?

In een gasmengsel oefent elk gas een partiële druk uit die evenredig is met zijn aandeel: in lucht bij 101kPa101\,\mathrm{kPa} heeft zuurstof (20.9%20.9\,\%) PO2=21.2kPaP_{\mathrm{O_2}} = 21.2\,\mathrm{kPa}, koolstofdioxide (0.04%0.04\,\%) 0.04kPa0.04\,\mathrm{kPa}. Een gas lost in een vloeistof op naar rato van zijn partiële druk (de wet van Henry): water dat bij 15C15\,{}^{\circ}\mathrm{C} met lucht in evenwicht is bevat 0.32mmol/L0.32\,\mathrm{mmol}/\mathrm{L} zuurstof (10mg/L10\,\mathrm{mg}/\mathrm{L}, 7mL/L7\,\mathrm{mL}/\mathrm{L} gas), tegen 8.7mmol/L8.7\,\mathrm{mmol}/\mathrm{L} (210mL/L210\,\mathrm{mL}/\mathrm{L}) in de lucht zelf. De partiële druk — in evenwicht in het water en de lucht dezelfde — is wat de diffusie tussen de media aandrijft; het gehalte is wat een ademhaler eruit kan halen. Koolstofdioxide is vijfentwintig keer beter oplosbaar dan zuurstof, en is dus nooit het gas dat het moeilijkst is uit te wisselen.
