Voor meetbare ruimten $(X, \mathcal A)$ en $(Y, \mathcal B)$ is de product-$\sigma$-algebra $\mathcal A \otimes \mathcal B$ op $X \times Y$ voortgebracht door de rechthoeken $A \times B$ (met $A \in \mathcal A$ en $B \in \mathcal B$) — een $\pi$-systeem. Voor $E \subseteq X\times Y$ en $x \in X$ is de sectie $E_x = \{y : (x,y) \in E\}$; en voor een functie $f$ op het product is $f_x = f(x, \cdot)$.
