什么是 Intersection and union?

又称: intersection · union

Definition 1.7 High School Mathematics · 第 1 章 — Numbers and Sets of Numbers

Let II and JJ be two sets of real numbers. The intersection I∩JI \cap J (“II and JJ”) is the set of numbers belonging to both; the union I∪JI \cup J (“II or JJ”) is the set of numbers belonging to at least one of them.

示例

Example 1.8

Take I=[−1, 3]I = \intcc{-1}{3} and J=(1, 5)J = \intoo{1}{5}. Draw both on the same line: they overlap between 11 and 33. Therefore

I∩J=(1, 3],I∪J=[−1, 5).I \cap J = \intoc{1}{3}, \qquad I \cup J = \intco{-1}{5}.

Note the brackets: 1∉J1 \notin J so 1∉I∩J1 \notin I \cap J, but 3∈I3 \in I and 3∈J3 \in J, so 3∈I∩J3 \in I \cap J.
