62Protecting the Nervous System
Two chapters have shown what the nervous system is: wiring whose junctions learn, decide — and can be fooled (Remark 60.7). This year’s close turns that anatomy into protection. What do sleep loss, noise, screens and the psychoactive substances actually do, junction by junction, to the machine that is you — and what does protecting it look like in practice, at fourteen?
62.1 Maintenance: sleep, and the senses’ limits
Proposition 62.1 (Sleep is synapse maintenance)
The filing-and-repairs of Proposition 33.9 has a junction-level reading: in sleep, the day’s strengthened synapses are consolidated — practice made permanent (Example 60.6) happens largely overnight — and the brain’s housekeeping clears the day’s chemical wear. Short nights leave yesterday’s learning half-filed and tomorrow’s weighing sluggish: the adolescent brain, mid-rewiring (Remark 56.6) and clock-drifted late, needs its hours most exactly when school starts earliest.

Example 62.2 (The revision paradox)
Two students before a test: one revises to midnight and on to two; the other revises to ten and sleeps. The second usually wins — the material crossed their junctions and was consolidated; the first’s extra hours cost the very filing that makes revision stick. “Sleep on it” is synapse engineering.
Proposition 62.3 (Loud is a dose)
The ear’s sensory cells — the hair-fine receivers that turn sound into nerve messages — do not regrow (Proposition 5.7 said it gently; here is the mechanism). Loud sound kills them by dose: volume times exposure. Concerts and earbuds at full volume spend, hour by hour, a capital of receivers that no sleep restores — the whistling after a loud night (Example 5.9) is the overdose warning. The rule is a budget: lower, shorter, with pauses — and earplugs where the amplifiers rule.

62.2 The junction-fooling substances
Proposition 62.4 (Psychoactive substances act at synapses)
Every substance that changes mood, perception or alertness works at Definition 60.4’s gaps — imitating a messenger, blocking one, or forcing its release:
- alcohol damps the whole system’s junctions: the loop slows end to end — judgment, reaction time (Example 33.7’s metres lengthen), balance, memory; the adolescent brain’s still-building junctions take the damping deepest;
- tobacco’s nicotine imitates a natural messenger and, repeated, rewires the reward junctions toward addiction (Proposition 36.5’s trap, now with its mechanism: the synapses adjust to expect the dose — and protest without it);
- cannabis imitates another messenger family, muddying exactly the junctions of memory, motivation and timing — costliest, again, in a brain under construction;
- the harder the substance, the cruder the junction-forcing — and the faster the reward rewiring that is addiction’s engine.

Remark 62.5 (Addiction, mechanically)
Remark 36.6’s trap has a wiring diagram now: the reward junctions, dosed repeatedly, adapt — receptors trimmed, thresholds raised — until the substance is needed to feel normal, and its absence is a system protest. That adaptation is the easy-entrance-hard-exit asymmetry made of synapses: starting is one decision; stopping is against rewired junctions. The still-adjustable adolescent brain rewires fastest — which is why every statistic finds early starters trapped deepest, and why start-never remains the cheap move.
Example 62.6 (The screen loop)
No molecule, same junctions: feeds and games are tuned — deliberately — to tickle the reward wiring with unpredictable small prizes, the schedule that trains junctions hardest. The result is a mild cousin of the trap: checking that resists stopping, evenings that vanish, sleep pushed late (Proposition 36.3’s hours, plus Proposition 62.1’s costs). Same defense as ever: decide the hours in advance, and keep the last one screen-free.
62.3 Practice: running your own protection
Method 62.7 (The nervous system’s owner’s manual)
The care list of Method 36.7, re-issued with mechanisms:
- sleep the hours — consolidation and housekeeping run at night; guard the last hour from screens;
- budget loudness — receiver capital does not regrow: volume down, pauses in, earplugs where it roars;
- helmets where falls are fast (Example 33.10) — wiring does not mend like bone;
- no junction-foolers for a brain under construction — and the “no” decided calmly in advance (Example 36.8’s pocket sentence, now with its full justification);
- use the machine — learning, sport, music: junctions strengthen with traffic, and a trained loop is the asset every other habit protects.
Example 62.8 (Help exists, and works)
For anyone already tangled — their own habit or a friend’s, substances or screens: the addresses of Example 59.7 serve here too. School nurses and doctors treat addiction as what this chapter shows it is — a wiring condition, not a character verdict — and rewired junctions can re-adapt: harder than never starting, far from hopeless. The worst plan is the playground’s: silence.

The gaps that adjust are why the machine can learn: use strengthens crossings, and skill, memory and every trained loop are junctions consolidated — the juggler’s month. The same adjustability is the vulnerability: substances and prize-schedules that dose the reward junctions adjust them too, toward needing the dose — addiction is learning’s mechanism, taught the wrong lesson. One property, both faces: protect the adjustability, and it compounds into skills; hand it to junction-foolers, and it compounds into traps.
62.5 Problem: The Prevention Evening
Problem 62.1
Weekend problem — the school’s parents-and-students evening, scripted with mechanisms
The class prepares the school’s prevention evening: four stations — sleep, sound, substances, screens — each with a demonstration and a mechanism card.
Part I — The stations’ cards.
- Write the sleep card: the demonstration is two volunteers’ ruler-test scores (Method 33.6), rested against short-nighted. Predict the scores and give the junction mechanism.
- Write the sound card: a decibel meter, a pair of earplugs, and the sentence “you cannot grow them back”. Fill in the mechanism.
- Write the substances card: one diagram of a synapse, three arrows labeled imitate, block, force. Assign alcohol, nicotine and a venom from Exercise 60.11 to their arrows.
- Write the screens card: no molecule — so what does the station’s phone-with-notifications demonstration share with the substances station?
Part II — The questions from the floor.
- A parent: “we drank at their age and turned out fine.” Answer with the construction-site asymmetry — what differs at fourteen?
- A student: “one cigarette can’t rewire anything.” Answer with Remark 62.5 and Remark 36.6 — what is the first dose’s real price?
- A parent: “aren’t screens just the new television?” Distinguish the schedules: what makes unpredictable small prizes the harder trainer?
- A student, quietly: “and if someone already can’t stop?” Give Example 62.8’s answer, addresses included.
Part III — The closing talk.
- The talk opens with the juggler and closes with addiction — “the same adjustability, read twice”. Draft that argument in four sentences.
- It then hands every student the pocket sentence of Example 36.8. Explain, mechanism included, why the sentence must be composed now.
- The evening’s poster shows the owner’s manual’s five items. Order them for a fourteen-year-old’s week, most protective first, and defend your first choice.
- Close the evening in one sentence: what is being protected, and why is fourteen the decisive decade’s middle?

1. Prediction: the rested volunteer catches centimetres sooner, steadier across tries. Mechanism: sleep consolidated the day’s junctions and cleared the chemical wear — the short-nighted loop weighs sluggishly at every synapse.
2. “The meter shows the dose rate; the plugs cut it. The ear’s sensory receivers die by accumulated dose and never regrow — hearing is capital, spent loudest at concerts and full-volume earbuds, defended by lower, shorter, plugged.”
3. Imitate: nicotine — posing as a natural messenger at the reward junctions. Block: the paralyzing venom — the muscle junction’s messenger refused. Force: alcohol fits the diagram as the system-wide damper (its arrow: muffling the junctions’ conversation end to end).
4. The target: the same reward junctions, trained by the same unpredictable-prize schedule — the notification demo is a dosing demonstration with light and sound for molecules.
5. At fourteen the junctions are still being built and are at their most adjustable: the same dose rewires deeper and sets faster than in a finished brain — “turned out fine” was played on easier difficulty.
6. The first cigarette’s price is all the following ones: each dose begins the reward junctions’ adaptation, and the entrance is exactly one decision wide — the exit, years of rewired protest. What is offered is the trap’s doorway, not a cigarette.
7. Television scheduled its rewards; the feed deals them unpredictably, item by item — and unpredictable small prizes are the schedule that trains junctions hardest, which is why the checking resists stopping as programs never did.
8. That stopping alone is fighting rewired junctions, and nobody has to: nurses and doctors treat the wiring condition confidentially — minors included — and re-adaptation works. First step: one trusted adult, today, silence being the only losing move.
9. “A month of juggling strengthens junctions until three balls fly themselves — that is learning, and it is what your synapses are for. Addiction is the identical mechanism: doses strengthen the wrong loop until it runs itself. The brain cannot offer one without risking the other — adjustability is the whole gift. So the question is never whether your junctions will be trained, only by what.”
10. Because the moment of the offer is the worst moment to start weighing — pressure loads the very junctions doing the deciding. A sentence composed calmly in advance turns the refusal into a reflex: pre-weighted routing, ready before it is needed.
11. A defensible order: sleep first (it maintains everything else’s gains), then no junction-foolers (the irreversible trap), then loudness (irreplaceable capital), then screens’ hours, then helmets. First choice defended: every other item’s benefits are consolidated overnight — sleep is the maintenance the rest depend on.
