71Our Responsibility
Nine years of this book end here, and its threads meet in a plain fact: the species that can read this page is the one species that understands the machinery it belongs to — and understanding, as Chapter 59 first said, brings choice. This closing chapter gathers the responsibilities the understanding creates: toward one’s own health, toward other people’s, and toward the web of living things that carries us all.
71.1 Responsibility for one’s own machinery
Proposition 71.1 (Health as informed self-management)
The book’s health threads, tied:
- the daily contract (Proposition 36.1) — food, movement, sleep, cleanliness — is organ maintenance you can now justify system by system (Proposition 52.8, Method 51.8, Method 62.7);
- the substances’ mechanisms are known (Proposition 62.4), the trap’s asymmetry priced (Remark 36.6);
- the reproductive choices have their map and their addresses (Chapter 59);
- and the body’s history is partly dealt (Chapter 63): knowing a family’s tendencies — the early gray, the furring hearts — is not fate but a maintenance schedule (Method 66.7: ranges, lived in).

Example 71.2 (The check-up, read as biology)
A routine check-up is this book in an appointment: pulse and pressure (the network read at the roadside, Example 52.7), the reflex hammer (Problem 60.1), vaccination ledger (Problem 70.1), family history (the dealt tendencies), and the standing advice — the contract, again. Medicine is largely applied maintenance of mechanisms you now own the manuals for.
71.2 Responsibility toward others
Proposition 71.3 (Health is shared machinery)
Three mechanisms make health a shared account:
- transmission (Definition 69.4): your hygiene, your cough’s cover and your sick-day at home are other people’s protection;
- pooled immunity (Proposition 70.6): vaccination guards, through you, those who cannot be trained;
- the commons of medicine: antibiotics kept working (Exercise 68.10) and blood given (Example 66.5 — the register runs on donors) are shared resources spent or stocked by individual choices.

Example 71.4 (One teenager’s shared account)
The week’s ordinary entries: stayed home feverish (transmission cut); boosters current (the pool held); a finished antibiotic course from spring (the commons unspent); a first blood donation planned at eighteen (the register stocked). None heroic — Example 36.2’s lesson at the scale of a town: public health is ordinary days, kept.
71.3 Responsibility toward the living world
Proposition 71.5 (The stewardship, restated with all its reasons)
The nature threads, tied with their mechanisms:
- every food chain starts green (Proposition 40.6), every table is an ecosystem’s output (Proposition 43.8);
- the webs absorb shocks by variety (Proposition 30.5), and variety is the reserve selection runs on (Proposition 66.6, Exercise 68.12) — biodiversity is not scenery but working capital;
- extinction forecloses forever (Proposition 30.8) — the one deliberate exception, smallpox, proves how absolute the word is (Exercise 70.12);
- the rules of lasting use are known (Proposition 35.5), their violations diagnosable (Example 48.7), their repairs demonstrated (Example 35.8, Example 30.10).
Stewardship is the same maintenance mindset as health, applied to the larger body we live inside.

Example 71.6 (What a citizen’s biology is for)
The votes, purchases and habits of adult life keep arriving dressed as questions this book has equipped: Is this fishery taking faster than renewal? Does this policy guard the pollinators’ habitat or pave it? Is this claimed miracle diet, cure or “gene for X” coherent (Method 66.7, Method 59.8)? Should this antibiotic be in this trough? A citizen who can run these audits is what nine years of chapters were for.
Method 71.7 (The graduate’s method)
Leaving Book 1, carry the method more than the facts:
- observe before concluding (Method 2.10 started it; every census and notebook since);
- test fairly — one difference, a control (Method 22.1, used in every grade after);
- name the mechanism — no claim audited until its link is named (Method 59.8);
- weigh independent witnesses (Method 67.7);
- and respect the living machinery, in your body and outside it: it is old, subtle, repairable within limits — and yours to keep.
Remark 71.8 (What comes next)
The high-school volume takes these threads up at the next magnification: the cell’s molecular machinery, genetics with its full mathematics, the immune and nervous systems in earnest, ecology as a quantitative science, and evolution as the framework it is. The questions will be the same ones, asked closer in. Bring the method.

Apply the method’s five steps to a viral “miracle cure” post, one step at a time.

Mechanism: which link does the cure claim to block — can it be named? Witnesses: do independent sources agree, or does everything trace to the seller? Respect: does it ask you to abandon working maintenance for the miracle? Five steps, and such posts rarely survive the first two.

71.5 Problem: The Graduation Audit
Problem 71.1
Weekend problem — one town year, audited with the whole book
Your town’s (invented) year in headlines: a winter flu wave; a spring debate over spraying the plane trees; a summer fish kill in the park pond; an autumn campaign for the new marsh reserve; and, year-round, the clinic’s vaccination and donation drives.
Part I — The health file.
- The flu wave: name the transmission routes the town’s advice targeted, and why the clinic vaccinated care-home staff first.
- The drives: state what the blood register and the vaccination ledger each stock, and who draws on them.
- A columnist mocks “fuss over hand-washing”. Answer with the ward of Example 69.7 — one paragraph.
- The pharmacy reports unfinished antibiotic courses returning. Which commons is being spent, by which mechanism?
Part II — The nature file.
- The spraying debate: run the orchard audit (Exercise 71.9) on “kill every insect” — who else dies, and what free services stop?
- The fish kill: a hot still week and a pea-green pond. Diagnose with Chapter 48, and prescribe.
- The marsh campaign: defend the reserve with three mechanisms — habitat, web, reserve of variety — one sentence each.
- A landowner asks “what has the marsh ever done for the town?” Answer with the free work ledger (Exercise 30.11, the river’s flood storage of Example 35.8).
Part III — The graduate’s close.
- Pick the year’s best and worst decision by the rules of lasting use, and justify each verdict.
- Show the method’s five steps at work in how the fish kill was resolved — from first observation to accepted mechanism.
- Draft the town paper’s year-end editorial in four sentences: health shared, nature banked, claims audited, method kept.
- The last line of the last page of Book 1 is yours to write: one sentence, addressed to the reader who started at Chapter 1’s snail.

1. Droplets and hands — hence cover-the-cough, wash, air the rooms, stay home ill. Staff first because they connect the building’s most fragile: their training pools exactly where the untrainable are gathered.
2. The register stocks matched blood for the day of accidents and surgeries; the ledger stocks trained memories. Drawers: anyone — the register’s match found by group, the pool’s shield covering the young, old and ill.
3. For example: “A ward once halved its mothers’ deaths with nothing but washed hands: the ‘fuss’ interrupts couriers no eye can see, and the century and a half since Semmelweis has only confirmed that the cheapest medicine in existence runs from a soap dish.”
4. The antibiotic commons, by ragged selection: each unfinished course spares and promotes the resistant minority, spending the drug’s power against everyone’s future infections.
5. The spray would take pollinators and pest-eaters with the pests: fruit set falls with the bees, and the survivors’ next outbreak meets no ladybugs, no tits — the free services stop, and the bill returns as rented hives and more spray.
6. The pea-green bloom respires all night in warm still water that holds little oxygen: the dawn minimum hit bottom (Example 48.5). Prescribe: night-running fountain, thin the mud and overgrowth — and mind the nutrient inflows that fed the bloom.
7. Habitat: the marsh is breeding ground — no habitat, no inhabitants. Web: its species pollinate, clean and feed the surroundings’ chains. Reserve: its varied populations bank the alleles hard times will call. (Storks return where meadows do.)
8. The unpaid ledger: flood water stored and released slowly, water filtered, pollinators housed, young fish nursed — services billed only when the marsh is drained and the town buys them from engineers.
9. Open answers; a defensible pair: best — the reserve (capital banked under all three lasting-use rules); worst — unfinished courses or the spray proposal (commons spent, workers evicted), judged by take-no-faster, keep-the-workers, return-what-you-borrow.
10. Observed: dead fish at dawn, green water, readings low. Fair test: dawn against afternoon probes; this pond against a clear one. Mechanism named: night respiration of the bloom under a lowered warm-water ceiling. Witnesses: probe data, the census’s tolerant survivors, the timing — all agreeing. Respect: the prescription manages the pond’s living machinery rather than dosing symptoms.
11. For example: “Our flu wave ended where hands were washed and sick days taken — health is a shared account. The marsh we saved is capital, not scenery, and it will pay in floods held and harvests pollinated. The year’s loudest claims fared worst under one question: name the mechanism. Keep the method: it is the town’s cheapest infrastructure.”
